A. A Look at Paul's Sufferings/Trials

   1. He despaired of life

   2. He abandoned an open door for the gospel - due to concern for the church

   3. He was depressed while waiting to hear from Titus

   4. He battled criticism of his physical appearance

   5. He was concerned the believers would be deceived by false prophets

   6. He experienced physical suffering in the ministry

B. The Benefits of Suffering

   1. Suffering keeps us from exalting ourselves

   2. Suffering keeps us dependent on the Lord through prayer

   3. Suffering reveals the sufficiency of God's grace

      a. Grace is dispensed liberally

      b. Grace frees us from the mastery of sin

      c. Grace empowers spiritual gifts

      d. Grace provides strength for spiritual labor

      e. Grace supplies an abundant ability for good deeds

      f. Grace enables redemption and forgiveness of sin

      g. Grace is the means by which we are saved

      h. Grace brings us into right standing before God

   4. Suffering reveals God's power in our weakness

   5. Suffering provides an opportunity to practice contentment
